A Secret About Motivational Speaking

with No Comments

Sometimes I need a shot in the arm. I need to do some Motivational Speaking to myself and the first place I go is to find someone who also needs it. This amazing thing happens when you help someone else…It helps you. On the surface that seems selfish but it is back to that study about the mechanics of smiling and your mood. They(scientists somewhere) discovered that the actual physicalization of a smile, the movement of your face into a smile, elevates your mood. The same is true of motivating someone. It motivates you.

When I take the time to motivate a friend or even a stranger in writing or in self care or anything really it lifts my spirits. When I was in chemo, or after when I was dealing with so many side effects and complications I couldn’t see straight I would call another survivor, or reach out to someone at the cancer center and say, “Hi” or ask how they were doing or crack a joke and I would feel better. After my active treatment was done I went into depression. The massive motivation of my life being in imminent danger was over and I was a bit lost. I was still dealing with all sorts of health issues but I was supposed to be fine. I wasn’t. Looking back I should have asked for help but I couldn’t see what was going on and I kept my feelings hidden from the family. That was a big mistake as I got grouchy easily, but I kept searching for my way out of the hole. The way out was to go out and help. I helped kids with homework and romantic troubles, I helped friends with their parenting questions. I helped newly diagnosed and re-diagnosed friends. I think I did a lot of good. It also helped me.

I also rediscovered the person I was as a young adult when my dorm room was constantly visited by friends with boy or girl problems and I was the sounding board. I don’t have an endless supply of this energy. I also have my writing career and my family that needs me. I do, however, have a plan and am putting it into action. See below for information on my motivational speaking career which has been a part of my life up until now but is launching in earnest in 2017. I already have a date booked for January and another for February or March(we have to figure out my schedule and the group’s).

Here are some Pics from an event awhile back.
