5 Steps to Writing a Synopsis

5 steps to writing a synopsis

I have to admit right off the bat I am no expert on writing a synopsis.

I come to it more from a screenwriter/playwrite point of view. I have had a few conversations with my brother about it and I am about to dive in. Here is the way I understand it at this point, my 5 steps to writing a synopsis…

  1. remove your emotions.
  2. make an action sequence list–this happens then this happens. He goes to school, the bully beats him up, he ends up in detention, the bully walks away, etc.
  3. write a character breakdown for each character: who they are, relationship to protagonist and antagonist, and what they want. You could throw in physical descriptions but that is up to you.
  4. Make sure it is a list of what happened in order so you can see what happens, not why or how just the what.
  5. Make a timeline and a graph to see if I have enough conflict and enough growth.

I have no idea if this is “right” or “correct.”

This is simply my next step. I have to get out of my book, reading it, rewriting it, and take a cold hard look at what is going on in it. I have to make sure I am enough of both God and the devil that I have made a good story.

Then I send it off to Beau, my brother, who will not worry at all about treating me with kid gloves but will actually critique the story. To tell the truth I am both excited and horrified at the prospect of what he will think! If you want a glimpse into our relationship take a look at our youtube videos…https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=Angelique+L%27Amour+and+Beau+L%27Amour

There are three all together but that is the search page.

Good Luck with your synopsis and please let me know if you have questions, suggestions, or comments! I love comments! If you have your own 5 steps to writing a synopsis let me know please.

Happy Summer!
